I'm always trying new stuff whether its a new store, restaurant, service, book, vacation spot, website etc and I like to write/rave on it. I'm also random and go on random rants about things that i think are funny, annoying, or that excite me. Welcome to my collection of random thoughts :)

What a wonderful weekend....

My weekend was pretty nonstop go go go, but it was wonderful and amazing for many reasons i cannot explain, but for the moments i can... i will

The weekend started with my dad and i seeing Toy Story 3.  Its a super cute movie.  The Barbie and Ken characters were my favorite.  My dad and i laughed and laughed.  I love watching Disney movies with him, more so than anyone else.  Makes me feel like a little girl again.

That night my dear friend Veronica was celebrating her birthday with friends over at Luigi's Pizza in midtown.  I had never been before and holy snikes is it delicious.  I ordered one slice and they were out of the pizza i ordered so made a fresh one for me.  it was awesome.  its a byob place so veronica and her friends had brought some beer and wine and it was nice to see her and her friends.  Her and her boyfriend played a game of hibachi which was fun to watch, as i had never played.  It was a really nice night, good food, great friend, and great company!

Saturday was GO GO GO!
After getting several things done, the gym, i met up with my friend Crystal at Empire cafe for brunch.  I had only had lunch and dessert there so Brunch was a first time thing for me there.  The line was ridiculous and Crystal had gotten there way before i did, so when i arrived she was at the front of the line.  I probably made the lady behind her mad but i just ran up and instead of being indecisive with the menu was like " umm make it two!"  Brunch was great and there was a nice breeze on the patio, not to mention good catch up time with Ms Crystal!

Afterwards i went to a cardio class at Pole la Teaz.  Its a women's fitness center that has pole classes and other dance classes.  I had bought a package from Groupon and went to my first class.  The experience was hilarious.  Some funny girls there.  I think its great though.  women of all shapes, sizes, race, were there and some were talking about how those classes had helped boost their confidence.  The dance class was like being at a club minus the boys.... learning some interesting booty shakin dance moves.  It wasnt a difficult workout (despite what some of the girls had told me beforehand) but it was definitely fun!  I would do it again just because they were playing a lot of hip hop i like and well i love to get down!

That night i met up with my dad, stepmom and stepbrother for dinner at guiglianni's in meyerland.  We had a late father's day dinner for my dad and it was quite nice.  My stepbrother invited us to go see his girlfriend Cecelia play in an orchestra at Discovery green play Beach boys songs.  We sat on the hill and omg was i the most perfect night.  breezy and lots of people with cute dogs.  The music wasnt too bad either.  Some belly dancers opened up the show which was fun.  My dad hates belly dancing so his comments were cracking me up!

Daddy on the hill
Afterwards i had a really great fun and exciting night and morning.

Sunday afternoon I checked out the Menil.  I had never been there before and i have heard great things about the exhibits and the architecture and since i enjoy both, why not.  Art is so interesting how it could mean nothing to us when we see it but the story of the significance to the artist could be really interesting and deep!

So that was only a fraction of my wonderful weekend but i thought i would share....

If you're happy and you know it.. Part 2

I couldnt find the article but Self's sara Eckel wrote this several years ago... i summarized

Take charge of your happiness

If you want to lead a more joyful, satisfying life, grab a pen, shut out the world and spend some quality time with these five mood-lifting exercises. After all, we are in charge of our own happiness, according to new research in the field. We cant promise that everyone of life’s bumps will cease to annoy you once you’re done, but we bet you’ll walk away with more smokes and self knowledge. You’re about 30 minutes from discovering your happiest self.

Chase your dreams

The happiest people are those who feel charged about what they do, where they live and the people around them. Hicks and associates , a business consulting firm in SF, interviewed more than 300 “happy’” people and found that we don’t need the perfect job/home/mate/fill in the blank to live a life that feels thrilling. What is essential: taking regular breaks from the daily grind to pursue whatever excites us most.

Exercise 1: Put your passions on paper

Time:4 minutes

What you need: pen, paper and timer

What to do: Set the timer for four minutes. Write down everything you love or feel passionate about until time’s up –your dog, cooking with friends, running etc… Let your list pour out without censoring yourself.

How to boost everyday: Tuck the list into your purse and read it daily at a designated time. enjoy one thing from the list during the next 24 hours. If entertaining is your bag, invite a group over for Monday night dinner. Love to travel? Research your next trip. Making time for things you adore is not only nurturing, but it adds meaning to life because it reminds us why its fun to be on this planet.

Put joy first

We all have things we need to be happy, but few of us focus on our so-called priorities. if you say you value family but spend 80 percent of your time at work, you’ll end up feeling dissatisfied. Even if you cant ditch your day job, you can get in sync with whats in your heart. You say honesty above all for instance. Then handling day to day interactions with integrity will reap feelings of well being. Plus when you live by what’s important to you, you’re less vulnerable to shifting circumstances. Remind yourself with what matters from this exercise.

Exercise 2: Define core values.

Time:10 minutes

What you’ll need: pen and paper

What to do : Circle the five qualities you value most

Adventurousness
Artistry
Boldness
Charity
Cheerfulness
Civility
Cleanliness
Compassion
Courage
Creativity
Dependability
Empathy
Faithfulness
Fitness
Flexibility
Health
Helpfulness
Honesty
Humility
Humor
Intelligence
Inventiveness
Kindness
Love
Loyalty
Perceptiveness
Pleasure
Reverence
Simplicity
Thrift
Trustworthiness
Wealth
Wisdom

For each selection, write a sentence describing how you incorporate this value into each day (such as “I’m always on time” for dependability) rank each pick from 1 to 5 according to how well you live by it. ( 1 not be at all and 5 being very much so)

How to boost everyday : Write down small ways you can regularly practice your lowest ranked value. Cherish loyalty? Call your best bud Sunday nights for a touch base chat. Once you reconnect with what you care about, you’ll find more ways to seek out joy.

Show some Appreciation

Love is all you need, though not necessarily the head-over-heels variety. What’s more important is appreciation-the kind of love that’s evoked by the mountaintop view that comes after a tough hike to a peak, or an afternoon spent goofing around with your niece who happens to be the cutest smartest toddler ever. Indeed, you might say that appreciation is the highest form of love. For one thing, it can blossom even when its not fully returned. For another, it’s physiologically impossible to experience feat or anxiety when you’re deep in appreciation mode.

Exercise 3: Create an appreciation diary

Time: 5 minutes

What you need: pen, paper, and a calendar.

What to do: every evening take out your calendar, and write down one positive aspect of your life- your husband’s habit of bringing you OJ in the morning, the swell of pride you feel after finishing a home improvement project. Use the questions below as a guide

Monday: what did you enjoy most about your day

Tuesday: Who enriched your life today? how?

Wednesday: What gave you peace of mind today?

Thursday: How did you help someone today?

Friday: how did you invest in your future this week?

Saturday: when were you at your best this week?

Sunday: What are you looking forward to in the week ahead

How to boost everyday: you your daily noted as a guide to discovering and relishing the smaller joys tht often crop up but rarely get your attention. Slow down and savor them, watch them multiply.

Go with the Flow

There are days when a long bath and an evening with the remote are all you need to feel content. To keep the pleasure rolling beyond the latest episode of trading spaces, however, you also need activities that require effort, skill and concentration, whether its completing a crossword puzzle or riding a bike. You want to look back and say, “ I learned something new. “ That generally requires mental or physical exertion. Ideally, aim to spend at least 20 percent of your leisure time doing things that fully absorb you and get you into a state of mind that flows. The deeper the satisfaction you’ll glean from developing skills and putting effort into whatever you’re doing will lift your spirits more than if you blot everything out with television.

Exercise number 4: Up the quality of your downtime

Time: 10 minutes

What you need: pen and paper

What to do: make a list of the 4 quick and dirty ways you unwind that don’t necessarily leave you feeling satisfied, such as watching reruns of Behind the Music or playing computer solitaire. Next jot down alternatives more likely to get you into an engaged frame of mind. For example:

Instead of watching reality tv

Consider documenting your own reality with a camcorder or weblog, or by sending weekly email updates to friends and family containing goofy, sweet, beautiful photos you have taken

Instead of eating a bag or oreos

Consider heading to the kitchen to develop your own signature cookie recipe or leaning how to make your grandmother’s world famous grasshopper pie

Instead of trolling for new clothes at the mall

Consider hosting a “new to you” clothes swapping party, where you and pals exchange garments that you no longer wear, or simply deconstruct some old t-shirts

Instead of playing a mind numbing video game

Consider a rousing night of poker,- or hearts even go fish- with a group of your closest friends

How to boost everyday: Now that you’ve made a list, starting putting your flow-inducing pursuits into action. Replace at least one monotonous habit per week with something more challenging and you’ll feel not only more relaxed but smarter too.

Pen your own happy ending

You’ve blown a big job interview. Your best friend is dating your ex. Whatever humiliation you’ve experienced, you’re bound to feel bad. Just how bad, however, varies from person to person and can have a big impact on happiness. People who brood about failure are likelier to be depressed six months after the fact than those who let life’s rejections roll off their back. so instead of replaying past flops, amend history. You can actually trick yourself into feeling better by creating newer more positive memories!

Exercise 5: Rewrite history

Time: 10-20 minutes

What you need: pen, paper and a highlighter

What to do: write the story of your worst moment ever ( the one that makes you cringe thinking about it) exactly as it happened. Use a highlighter to mark all the red flags of the narrative- the signals along the way that, with hindsight, you now know meant trouble ahead ( like the snooty receptionist who had no record of your appointment for a job interview). Then outlandishly revise your role without altering anyone else’s. The point is to lighten up and get out of the victim mode. Instead of painfully recalling how the receptionist treated you, fabricate a memory of you morphing into Donald trump and bellowing “You’re Fired!” to the rude woman. we all carry memories in the body that’s why your heart aches when you head a song you danced to with an old love. The good news is your body doesn’t know the difference between the real experience and one you’ve made up

How to boost everyday: once you’ve recast yourself as the person in control, the should, coulds and woulds will melt away, leaving you more self assured. By creating a new story you’ll change your self talk from “ugh I was such a dope!” to “ Hey, I let her have it!” In the end, when it comes to bringing more happiness into your life, taking responsibility for your own feelings is key. Take on that power and it will be yours to keep.

Helping others and giving back....

One of my goals this year was to become more involved in philanthropy.  After helping feed the homeless not too long ago i found an article in one of my Houston magazines about these girls that started an organization to connect people with various charities and ways to give back.  Its called Charity Chick's Houston.  They have a very long list of organizations you can become involved with.

yesterday i was browsing for something to get involved with and i found one called Wish Upon a Wedding.  Its a foundation that helps make people who are terminally ill fulfill their dreams of having a wedding to the one they love.  Some people have several years while others have several weeks to live.  While i'm in no rush to get married, For those who dont have much time to live, I think its really sweet that they do this for some.  There was one story where a lady had three weeks to live and they threw her a wedding.  read about it here.  It happened back in May in Seattle and the lady has since passed but omg so sweet.

The Houston chapter just kicked off and is having their launch party next week.  I emailed their president and asked how i can be of further help and let her know i'd like to be a volunteer.  With as many weddings as i have been in i figured I could easily help!  Being in my friends and some of my family member's weddings have been such beautiful moments for me that i think its awesome to give that gift to those people who dont have much time.  if anyone is interested in volunteering with me let me know.  I'm checking out other places listed on Charity Chicks.  Especially childrens and animal ones :)

If you're happy and you know it... part 1

So in thinking about happiness and how many unhappy people I know, I thought i would post this article as some encouragement. Well actually, i was putting together my workouts and my inspiration/ideas book ( havent touched it in FOREVER) and going through some old fitness magazines I found an article on happiness. I've meant to bring it to work with me to write about it so i googled it and well its so old its not on the net but i found something similar. I'll post the other article as part 2. Anyways, Shape magazine did this article. I've bolded the key parts i like:

You don’t have to win the lottery or meet your soul mate. You simply have to make a few small changes to the way you approach your day…

Though we all know what happiness is, achieving it remains a mystery to most of us. At best it’s elusive, a joyful state that crops up when the circumstances are right. But the latest research shows that happiness is right at your fingertips. You can strengthen and develop it, much like a muscle, until you can summon it anytime — even if your personality generally tends towards a glass-half-empty outlook. “Research shows that our ability to experience happiness is 50 percent influenced by genetics, 10 percent by events, and 40 percent by intention,” says Prof Dan Baker, director of a US-based life enhancement programme. “It’s a side effect of living purposefully, standing up for what you believe in, and developing your full potential.” In doing this, you can elevate not only your state of mind, but your health too. Fortunately, one of the easiest ways to achieve happiness is to break free of daily stressors and focus on the little things in life that bring you joy. To make it even easier for you, we’ve put together 10 simple steps to follow…

PLAY UP YOUR STRENGTHS

Focus on your assets rather than trying to compensate for your weaknesses,” says MJ Ryan, author of 365 Health and Happiness Boosters (Conari). If you’re not sure where your talents lie, pay attention to the compliments you receive. Also, get comfortable discussing the expertise you do have. If you have a flair for technology and your boss needs help putting together a PowerPoint presentation, speak up! Showing confidence — and backing it up with action — allows others to see you in your best light, which creates a positive cycle, says Prof Baker.

The more you talk about your strong points, the more real they become, the better you feel, and the more likely you are to continue putting your best foot forward. “Ask a close friend for feedback on what your strengths are and then brainstorm ways to enhance these,” suggests Cape Town psychologist Janine Taylor.

▶ Keep a diary of at least one thing to do each day that boosts your strong points.

▶ Do a good deed. Being kind to others promotes self-esteem.

▶ Keep positive words nearby: on your fridge, stick Post-its on your mirror, your computer screen and car dashboard. This will keep you optimistic and ensure a healthier frame of mind. Repeat these words to yourself throughout the day as a means of encouragement (it’s probably best to do so quietly lest your colleagues think you’re loopy!)

SIMPLIFY YOUR LIFE

Money doesn’t buy happiness. In fact, extra cash not only often fails to bring joy after basic needs are met, it can actually prevent it. “People who say making a lot of money is important to them are more likely to experience depression, anxiety, and headaches — and less likely to report being satisfied with their lives,” says Tim Kasser, author of The High Price of Materialism (Bradford). According to Kasser’s research, time affluence — feeling you have enough time to pursue the things you want to — is a better predictor of a satisfied life than income. To avoid thinking about material possessions, meet a friend for tea at an outdoor café rather than at the mall. And if that rush you get from buying a new pair of shoes intervenes, remember that this pleasure is momentary, and will disappear once you’ve worn the shoes a few times. “To achieve lasting contentment, you need to focus on experiences, not things,” says Kasser.

GET A HOBBY

You love painting, scrapbooking or digging in your herb garden, but you have difficulty fitting creative time into your packed schedule. Consider this: “Creativity helps people adapt to life by making them more flexible and open to experiences,” says psychology professor Dean Keith Simonton. “This, in turn, fosters satisfaction and self-esteem.” Since the benefits come from the process rather than the product, you don’t have to paint like Picasso to feel the effect. If a drawing class seems too ambitious, add an “openness hour” to your day several times a week, suggests Simonton, and during that time, try something that sparks your curiosity; perhaps cooking a new recipe or reading poetry. Another way to broaden your horizons is to change your routine. Try a different restaurant or take in a concert rather than a movie. Break from the daily grind and watch as your mind expands — and your happiness level rises.

ACCEPT THAT SOME PEOPLE WON'T LIKE YOU

No, it’s not easy to cope with the idea that the colleague who sits opposite can’t seem to warm to you. But if you continue to fret over it, it’ll bring you down — and it won’t change her opinion. While friendship buffers stress, negative relationships can pose real roadblocks to happiness. “If you take everyone’s judgment to heart, you surrender your own ability to view yourself clearly,” says Baker. Next time you find yourself thinking about your office nemesis or worrying over a comment made against you, pause for a moment and recall the last compliment you received from someone you trust. Remind yourself that he or she has a good sense of your character. Then think of the things you’ve accomplished that mirror that compliment. This simple act will turn you into your own biggest ally and make you feel powerful and in control.

DECIDE, AND THEN MOVE ON

Less is truly more when it comes to choices. Too many options can paralyse you, prompt you to make a poor decision, or leave you second-guessing yourself. A recent study published in the Journal of Consumer Research found that the fewer shops people went to, the easier it was for them to make decisions — and the more content they felt. “When we think there’s a more attractive alternative out there, even our good decisions leave us unsatisfied,” says Barry Schwartz, author of The Paradox of Choice (Ecco). “People who continually seek out the best of everything — be it a job, a mate, or a laptop — are more stressed and less fulfilled.” To reduce anxiety, don’t revisit a decision once it’s made. “Say to yourself that good enough is good enough,” suggests Schwartz. “Keep repeating the mantra until you believe it. At first it will be unsettling, but after a few weeks, you’ll feel liberated.” Finally, arbitrarily limit your options — whether you’re searching for a soul mate or a sole mate. “Make a rule: Three online profiles and I pick, or two shops and I decide.”

SILENCE TOXIC SELF-TALK

When your boss asked you a question at the meeting this morning and you mangled your answer, did you replay the scene in your mind for the rest of the day? If so, you probably have a habit of ruminating on your shortcomings — as do most women, says Susan Nolen-Hoeksema, author of Women Who Think Too Much (Henry Holt & Co). “My research shows that thinking about your mistakes obsessively drags you down and gives you a negative disposition. One problem leads to another and then another, and all of a sudden it seems as if your whole life is a mess,” says Nolen-Hoeksema. “Over time, this pattern makes you vulnerable to depression.” But it’s easier than it seems to break the cycle. Do something active and you’ll be forced to refocus: go for a run, or clean out those cupboards you’ve been neglecting. After you’ve cleared your mind, take a small step towards easing your concern, rather than dwelling on it. Still thinking about your morning mess-up at the office? Why not send a short e-mail to your boss with a correction. Worried about a rattle in your car or the state of your savings account? Make an appointment with a mechanic or a financial advisor. Just one small action can pop the bubble of worry surrounding you.

WIDEN YOUR CIRCLE OF FRIENDS

Relationships with close friends are one of the best vehicles to happiness,” says Ryan. “These bonds give us a sense of purpose and come with just as many emotional benefits as a romantic partner does.” Additionally, research shows that friends keep us healthy, reduce anxiety, and even foster longevity. In fact, friendships are so critical to a woman’s wellbeing that the opposite of friendship — social isolation — has been found to be as damaging to one’s health as heavy smoking, says the Harvard Medical School’s Nurses’ Health Study. To make the most of your ties to others, put the same energy into your relationships with your friends as you would into a relationship with a significant other. Be enthusiastic, set aside time for special activities together, and keep each other updated on your daily lives. Your reward? Your pals will do the same for you, which will create feelings of support, belonging, and gratification.

ACCENTUATE THE GOOD

There’s a reason people tell you to stop and smell the roses: it’s not just the flower’s perfume that makes life better, but also the appreciation of it. “Gratitude is the cornerstone of happiness. It’s all about noticing what’s right in our lives instead of what’s wrong,” says Ryan. In a study from the Universities of Miami and California, people who were instructed to keep gratitude journals, recording every instance in which they were thankful, reported higher levels of enthusiasm, optimism, and energy than those who did not keep these diaries. The lesson? “Don’t wait for something big to happen to you to feel happy,” says Ryan. “Make yourself happy by noticing the good that’s already there.” Start a simple ritual. Write a phrase like “Be grateful” on a piece of paper and put it in your pocket or any other place you’ll notice it. Each time you touch or see the note, name one thing you appreciate. Before you know it, gratitude — and daily bliss — will become automatic.

MOVE IT!

Although it’s been proven time and again that working out lifts your mood, builds muscle, boosts metabolism, and improves sleep quality, we often let our exercise time slide. If a tight schedule is keeping you from lacing up your running shoes, keep this in mind: a study from Northern Arizona University in the US found that energy levels, fatigue, and mood improved after just 10 minutes of moderate exercise. After 20 minutes, the effects were even greater. Regular exercise is definitely a mood-booster and research has shown it to be as effective in treating mild depression as anti-depressant medication. “There is also a clear correlation between a healthy self-esteem and high levels of self-efficacy (a belief in your ability to do something successfully), and coping with high levels of stress. If you are exercising regularly, you are more likely to feel good about yourself,” says Kathy Mc Quaide, sports scientist and health promotions manager at the Sports Science Institute of SA. In addition, exercise provides a socially acceptable outlet for anger and hostility. “Repression of anger is definitely associated with certain disease states. In fact, depression is sometimes described as anger turned inwards,” she says.If loneliness is what’s making you miserable, exercise creates the perfect opportunity to make new friends: join a running club, sign up for yoga classes, take tennis lessons. If peace and quiet is what you need, exercise time is also a good time for solitude and reflection. An early morning run alone, a mountain bike ride through a forest at the weekend… “Exercise provides an opportunity for mastering new skills and realising different goals that are unrelated to current stressors. Focusing on something that is enjoyable and brings about such positive effects on one’s health, can be refreshing and invigorating,” says Mc Quaide. “Our SSISA Healthy Weight Programme subjects those who sign up for the eight-week programme to a questionnaire POMS (profile of moods states) at the beginning and end. Almost without fail, the fatigue and anger indices drop and the vigour and vitality scores increase after the eight week period,” Mc Quaide says.Worried you don’t have the time to exercise? Walk the stairs to your office rather than taking the lift; get yourself off the sofa and into the park at weekends, throwing Frisbee with your kids; get up half an hour earlier and take a fast walk or a jog around the block; leave your desk at lunchtime and take a stroll around the city; abandon the TV and exercise with the family; meet with your girlfriends for a walk rather than a glass of wine. Bonus: your interactions with others will increase, which will give your mood a double boost.

MATCH YOUR INTENTIONS TO YOUR ACTIONS

You have goals, both big and small; you make to-do lists and set priorities. So why don’t you feel fulfilled? “We find happiness when we derive pleasure as well as meaning from what we do,” says Tal Ben-Shahar, a lecturer in positive psychology at Harvard. In other words, you may say family comes first, but if you work 14-hour days, you’re creating an internal conflict that chips away at your chances of happiness. When researchers from the University of Georgia examined the lives of people who reached 100, they found one of the most common things the centenarians shared was a sense of purpose they continued to pursue. If you work long hours but want to spend more time at home, start by leaving the office 15 minutes earlier each day until you’re there for just eight hours. And instead of saving all your leave days for one trip, set a few aside for your kids’ school events or for spending an afternoon with your partner.

May's Reviews

In May I visited a lot of new spots so here are my reviews on them....

Piranha's Killer Sushi (Arlington)

When i went to Arlington for the Warrior Dash, Toneisha and I had our little adventure day and she took me here since she knew i hadnt had sushi in awhile. They are known for their "Sexy" Roll and "Marry Me" roll. I ordered the sexy roll and well it wasnt necessarily sexy but it was delicious. It had mango on it and the sweet combined with the hot from siracha was awesome. Toneisha ordered their HUGE Mexican roll which she was nice enough for me to try as well.

The restaurant was small and quaint. it reminded me of the size of Sushi Zushi in Stone Oak. I liked their material choices from a design standpoint. I'd totally go again....

Fuzzy's tacos (arlington)

That night we met up with Braden and brandon and checked out the place. I think i had their fajitas which were pretty good. I wasnt disappointed but i wasnt overly impressed either. It was definitely a fun hangout place with people our age to get a cheap dinner and have some drinks. I like casual laid back places like this and well so did everyone there... it was packed!
Mia Bella ( Houston Pavilions)

My friend/mentor at work took me to eat lunch here one day for a mentor lunch. The restaurant is really pretty, nice, but the tables are a little crammed together and i think they have some ventillation problems because by the end of lunch it was smoky from the kitchen in there. The food was great though. I had one of their chicken dishes with extra veggies. Awesome!

Hobbit Cafe

My friend Jenny had reccommended this place to me awhile ago for Brunch so when i was looking into a place for my birthday i decided to try it out. The menu had lots of options, healthy options and lots of dishes with avocado ( my fave) so we checked it out and i had both my bday brunches here. I love it.... and their mimosas. Check out my bday blog for some photos of the food.

W GRILL (Washington Ave)
I had seen this several times driving by and i had read about it in a Houston downtown life magazine so when Michelle was here we decided to check it out. Its a tiny little old drive thru that has been convereted into a newer drive through with coffees, breakfasts, smoothies, burgers, sandwiches, tacos, wings etc... You can call ahead, drive through or you can park and dine on their deck. I had their serano pepper burger with avocado and michelle had their fish tacos. Omg the burger was amazing. They cook everything in front of you and they put the pepper in the meat whicl its grilling. so flavorful. it was such a nice evening out too. check out the photos.
Raku ( Midtown)
I had seen this place under 24 hour fitness and had been curious about it and had read some reviews on the design of it and i was intrigued because of its use of red rope in the space. i went to dinner here a few weeks ago and was impressed in every way. our server was a little pushy to get us to order more and the priciest thing on the menu but the design was GORGEOUS, the food was great, everything down to the place setting. I wish i could remember what was ordered because it was great. I know one was a peppered tuna roll or something but yum yum was it good!

Transformations

This is way over do, but several weeks ago i watched the season finale of several of my favorite shows.

Two of which were the Biggest Loser and the show Parenthood. Both on NBC.
I absolutely love how both shows have shown such a transformation in the people on the show. The Biggest Loser more so on their outward transformation and how that effects them in their lives. Parenthood you see all the characters transform and shape. The parents with their child aith austism, the grandparents and their marriage, the 2 cousins fighting over a guy and my personal favorite is crosby and how he has transformed with the knowledge and love he now feels knowing he has a 5 year old son. He's been my favorite transformation.
The biggest loser finale put such a big smile on my face.... esp when O'neil ( aka uncle) came out. He is such a sweet man and such a GREAT DAD. i"m a sucker for father daughter stories.
Anyways, he jumped down the stairs when on the show he couldnt do stairs at all.
Just about everyone on the show changed drastically! I think this was by far, my favorite season of Biggest Loser. They all made such positive physical, mental, emotional, and internal changes. I just LOVE IT!
I watched the new Jillian Micheals show last night and its crazy to see some of these people's emotional and mental states and whats holding them back... what their fears are. I love that NBC is doing this and hope it inspires other people to DO SOMETHING. nothing is worse than someone complaining about their life out of control ( in their work, weight, relationships, financially)and doing nothing about it. I love these shows that show proactiveness!

Summer Must Haves

From my travel experiences i have found there are several things that just make them even more enjoyable

1) Digital Waterproof Camera

I bought this Canon Powershot D10 before going to Costa Rica last December. One of the best investments i have ever made. I bought it from BuyDig.com ( via bing) and spent a little under 300 i paid a little extra for a case and a memory card. Its waterproof, shockproof, freeze proof and semi drop proof. We took it surfing, repelling waterfalls, ziplining in the rain, white water rafting and got all those moments on film and on video! I dont leave home without it!

2) a GOOD Sunscreen

i have become a fan of coppertone's Sport spray sunscreens. they provide good coverage, last a long time on my fair skin, and arent greasy. I like banana boat too but you are like a greased pig when you wear their spray.... i HATE getting burnt and i dont want to damage my skin so i stick to a super high spf. i dont tan anyways, but the more protection the better.

3) a good beach bag/tote/backpack

Depending on your activity depends on what kind of bag you need. I like to be prepared for anything so i always have some sort of bag with my money, camera, chapstick, sunscreen, bugspray etc. Before Costa Rica i bought a mini backpack at acadamy in the Kid's section for 5 bucks. it was perfect. i carried all our stuff in there, it was always on me, not to big just right. the zippers of course broke the last day, but it was intended to last the trip and cost 5 bucks and well it served its purpose. i recently bought a HUGE beach bag for my bahamas trip and you bet their is room in there for anything and everything... including my beachball

4)sun protection: hat and sunglasses

Gotta protect your face from the sun... and your eyes so i always have a baseball hat or straw hat near by

5) Comfy flipflops

You never know if you are gonna have a long treck to walk and the last thing you want is a pair that rubs the top of your foot, or between your toes so make sure they are comfy!

6) a good coverup!

You never know when you might leave the beach and want to go grab a bite to eat and some places dont want you sitting in your bathing suit anyways.... my personal favorite is my Juicy Couture coverup ( as seen in the photo). the material is so pretty it looks like it could double as a really dressy sundress... it makes it appropriate for me to walk through anywhere...

7) a good conditioner or hair mask

i pack little sample of conditioners i have gotten in my beachbag for after surfing or wading in the ocean. With my curly hair its already near impossible to brush it when its dry or wet it tangles so easily and well beach water makes it 100 times worse. its like one big rat's nest and the last thing i wanna do is try and comb it out later after its been sitting. In costa rica i took some packet samples of Fekkai's conditioner and hairmask and after surfing put it in my hair so that when i returned my board and i hosed off i could rinse my hair out and boom tangles gone and my hair is good to go!

8) a good chapstick or lipgloss with spf

while sunburns hurt... sunburned lips and chapped lips SUCK.... i cant get enough moiture

9) a FLATTERING bathingsuit

ok guys and girls ( mainly girls) just because you can get something on or that it fits.... DOES NOT mean you should wear it. There are so many brands of bathing suits and styles that can accomodate all kinds of body types. For example... monokinis really arent one pieces designed to hide things. they only point our your "extras" because they cutouts are always in those places. Shop around and most likely you can find something whether you have a butt, too much butt, big or small chested, skinny, curvy, overweight, long waisted short waisted. If you dont know look up numerous magazines online that offer advice on styles based on body type. Dont think that the bikini rack at target (who doesnt make the greatest bathingsuits to flatter anyone) or victoria secret is all you have... not true! Take someone shopping with you that will be honest with you. Besides, if you're gonna spend a good majority outdoors with friends and there could be a photos whatever.... you wanna be in what you feel the most confident, sexy and comfortable!

I have several other things but those are the main ones that always lead me for a good stress free day at the beach/lake/pool/river whatever!

Feeding the Homeless

The Church Under the Bridge
Several weeks ago my stepmother Kathy forwarded an evite to me about feeding the homeless in downtown. From what I could see it looked like it was right under 45 right in front of my apartment so I said I would go.

She picked me up last tuesday and it turned out it was on the other side of 59 where it crosses 45 but just a few blocks from where i thought it would be. We parked under the bridge and we ran into some of her friends. They are part of a group that is the professional division of campus crusade for Christ, the name slips my mind. I found it ironic that we pulled up to help the homeless in her Corvette and so glad that nothing happened to it while it was parked under there.

When we arrived not that many homeless were there and we didnt know what we were doing or what to expect. Turns out we were helping with the "Church under the bridge". They used to have services under the bridge where i originally thought the event was taking place. We met one of the men who run the place and he explained to us that the organization has like 12 churches ( something like that) and they do about 77 services a week at bridges around houston. He was a recovered alcoholic and they only people allowed to run their ministry are people who have once been drug addicts, alcoholics, on the streets etc as they feel it adds to their ministry.
they played some worship songs off a computer on a loud speaker and we talked to some of the people who had come early.

We talked to these 2 lesbian girls who were telling us about their struggles living on the streets. They had been homeless about a year and told us that they always made fun of homeless people and found it ironic that now they were homeless. They had gone to Social Security that day to get their SS cards. Apparently it is common for homeless people to have their ids confiscated or stolen which makes it even harder to get a job because you dont just need a drivers license, you also need a SS card or voter registration etc.

My stepmom asked them if they had every considered staying at the Star of Hope downtown and they informed us that its not as pretty of a picture as the organization likes to put on. they didnt go into much detail other than they dont feed them much and all the money goes to their employees. I'm sure had we pressed they would have given more info on why they feel that way.
They then told us about a place in downtown called the Beacon where they volunteer 4 days a week for 12 hours and help make bread and clean and do other things because the Beacon will feed them, help provide clothes and well "keep them out of trouble"

We heard stories about them waking up with men on top of them... she of course said she beat the crap out of him and the following day she had to serve him dinner at the beacon... with his black eye.

The most interesting thing she said was, "we cant wait to get our ids so we can take whatever work we can get and get off the streets..... i'll tell you one thing i dont ever want to live another winter on the streets. My fingers and toes were blue it was miserable..... I'll admit though, we got a little lazy and comfortable for awhile which only hurts us in the end"

The service started and the guy who preached did a sermon on journeys and spoke on 3 journeys in the Bible. I wont go into it because thats not the point, however, i did think while the message was good, he talked WAY WAY WAY too long and those poor people probably lost interest halfway through the first journey. Not to mention he talked to philosophically and metaphorically. Half those people were doped on something or have some mental issues that they were with us but they werent with us if you know what i mean.

So at the end of it they asked us volunteers to go to the front and that we would pray with anyone who wanted or needed help. Yikes... i was NOT prepared for that. This man we had met setting up a few minutes prior, Ricky, came over to myself and 2 other ladies in the group and told us that he hadnt seen his family in awhile and that he wanted to pray that he would soon and for steady work (really nice guy)

When the prayer was over we went to the long table and set up the food. after it was set up they women went first and then the men, then they got back in line with the number they had been given on a card earlier in the day. after that they could come back over and over again. there were probably 120-150 people by this point.

What we served them made me SAD! A catering company cooked the main dish and the rest of the food was donated from stores and restaurants and it was food that had to be sold or expired that day. some of it i had to throw away because it had mold on it.

So when they went through the line they got a pasta dish ( a tiny bit) with some meat in it, then they got two pieces of bread or a roll, then a piece of banana nut cake or a muffin, then a choice of a cookie, donut, cinnamon roll or danish. Pretty much no nutrition for them at all. I think its awesome that those people cooked or donated food but man something besides sugar or starch would have been good for them.

Some of those people went through so many times. One girl was pregnant and omg my heart went out to her. Some of them didnt talk much ( some told us they dont because they are embarrassed), some were very appreciative, some guys almost got in a fight..... needless to say it was interesting and very rewarding. I would like to do it again actually. That man Ricky helped us clean the whole thing up and was so appreciative to us for helping and apparently he is there every night.

At the end they had the people write prayer requests while they waited in line on the back of their cards with their number on it. we split them up and i meant to bring it to work so i could include what some of them wrote. Some prayed specifically for people, one many prayed for his wife who was pregnant and their baby, some just put " i pray for the whole world", one guy listed any and everything in this world including hitler on his list. My stepmom asked me to give her some of my cards as i got a lot with requests on it and she didnt. She was ok with me giving her that one. I wasnt sure how to approach that one. maybe i'll add some of the things they asked or said on here later. Some were really sweet....

So that was my homeless adventure. we took a group shot at the end. i think its great people do things for other people. I was glad to do something philanthropic since i wanted to get more involved. I found a charity website through a magazine the other night that will hopefully get me more involved!

Not letting life knock you down

Inspiration in the random places….

Life is a constant battle. A battle of wits, a battle against others, and often more so a battle against ourselves. Like everyone out there, I have been through my ups and downs in life and have taken something from each experience/person/event that has happened in my life. I strongly believe that everything happens for a reason. Sometimes it takes years for those reasons to be figured out.

I think as people we should always strive to be the best we can be and we should do what we can to be happy. What most people do not realize is that happiness is a conscience decision. You can choose to be happy, you really can. Its when you let other people’s opinions, stress, words, actions get to you and take away what can be a real happy place. We choose how we are going to let events, people, actions and words effect us. I’m guilty of this and over time have just learned to not let what happens determine my happiness with myself and my life. I’m a fighter and not gonna let you, or anything else bring me down!

One of my favorite movies ever (yes I’m cheesey) are the Rocky movies. If you haven’t seen them… I’m very sorry. I think the first decade of my life at least one Rocky movie was watched a weekend (or Sylvester stallone’s “over the top”). Not only is it one of my favorite series of movies but nothing pumps me up like the movie soundtrack….

I always found all the stories to be so inspirational and encouraging at all the things in life he goes through ( in and out of the ring). A few years ago Sly made the Rocky Balboa movie. I have seen it a million times and my older brother and I had a conversation about it after it came out and I watched it yesterday morning and I was thinking about what my brother and I talked about as well as how much I enjoyed the lessons from the movie. The things I love about the movie (it starts off slow, but that’s where all the good lessons are I think) are endless but to sum it up:

1) The love for his wife that he shows. She has passed in this movie but he thinks about her all the time and how she brought so much joy and happiness to his life
2) The relationship with his son and they progress/lessons they have as the movie goes on
3) Treating others with kindness without expecting anything in return
4) Respecting others
5) Doing what makes you happy
6) Not enabling the hardships in life to dictate your happiness/future and maximizing your full potential

So towards the beginning of the movie Rocky has to go and get a permit to fight again, in which they initially deny him because of his age and this is his reponse:

Rocky Balboa: Yo, don't I got some rights?
Boxing Commissioner: What rights do you think you're referring to?
Rocky Balboa: Rights, like in that official piece of paper they wrote down the street there? Boxing Commissioner: That's the Bill of Rights.
Rocky Balboa: Yeah, yeah. Bill of Rights. Don't it say something about going after what makes you happy?
Boxing Commissioner: No, that's the pursuit of happiness. But what's your point
Rocky Balboa: My point is I'm pursuing something and nobody looks too happy about it.
Boxing Commissioner: But... we're just looking out for your interests.
Rocky Balboa: I appreciate that, but maybe you're looking out for your interests just a little bit more. I mean you shouldn't be asking people to come down here and pay the freight on something they paid, it still ain't good enough, I mean you think that's right? I mean maybe you're doing your job but why you gotta stop me from doing mine? Cause if you're willing to go through all the battling you got to go through to get where you want to get, who's got the right to stop you? I mean maybe some of you guys got something you never finished, something you really want to do, something you never said to someone, something... and you're told no, even after you paid your dues? Who's got the right to tell you that, who? Nobody! It's your right to listen to your gut, it ain't nobody's right to say no after you earned the right to be where you want to be and do what you want to do!... You know, the older I get the more things I gotta leave behind, that's life. The only thing I'm asking you guys to leave on the table... is what's right.

I love that part of the movie!
My favorite part of the movie is when Rocky is working at his restaurant Adrian, and his son comes in to try and talk him out of fighting the young heavy weight champion. His son takes him outside and basically begs him not to do it because he is tired of living in his dad’s shadow and that if he loses its just going to make his life harder and why would he want to do that to his son. This is Rocky’s response. I freakin get chills at this scene in the movie I find it soooo true and applicable to my own life

Rocky Balboa: You ain't gonna believe this, but you used to fit right here. [taps on the inside of his hand] I'd hold you up to say to your mother, "this kid's gonna be the best kid in the world. This kid's gonna be somebody better than anybody I ever knew." And you grew up good and wonderful. It was great just watching you, every day was like a privilige. Then the time come for you to be your own man and take on the world, and you did. But somewhere along the line, you changed. You stopped being you. You let people stick a finger in your face and tell you you're no good. And when things got hard, you started looking for something to blame, like a big shadow. Let me tell you something you already know. The world ain't all sunshine and rainbows. It's a very mean and nasty place and I don't care how tough you are it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain't about how hard ya hit. It's about how hard you can get it and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward. That's how winning is done! Now if you know what you're worth then go out and get what you're worth. But ya gotta be willing to take the hits, and not pointing fingers saying you ain't where you wanna be because of him, or her, or anybody! Cowards do that and that ain't you! You're better than that! I'm always gonna love you no matter what. No matter what happens. You're my son and you're my blood. You're the best thing in my life. But until you start believing in yourself, ya ain't gonna have a life. Don't forget to visit your mother.

I always loved that part of the movie but now that I’m at the place I am in life where I can’t tolerate how people make excuses for themselves and they LET others tell them they aren’t worth it or don’t deserve happiness or “winning” I feel like this is probably the most accurate quote in how I try and live my life EVERYDAY! I freakin love Rocky! Lol well said Sly ( yes he wrote the screenplay). When he’s fighting he takes a heavy blow that almost knocks him down and they slow the movie down and so many things flash through his head and he has a little chat with himself where he is like “ok rock what did you tell the kid! Its not about how hard you get hit but getting back up, get back up, get up…”
He gets up and he finds his inner strength and throws his hardest punches of the fight.

Stallone is producing a new movie called the expendables that’s coming out in August. Its got a ton of stars in it! I’m thrilled. I think he always does a great job acting and throwing in important lessons in his movies… as well as great action and usually a good soundtrack!
http://www.theexpendablesmovie.net/
There is an interview they did with him about the movie in regards to an injury he faced…. I think it just goes to show how he puts his all into his characters, in a very candid way. read it on that link

All the excitement.... Turning 25

I'm officially "old"
Well this year I was excited to celebrate as i blogged before... So i thought I would recap my celebrations. Of course NOTHING went according to plan but thats ok.

So it started in Dallas as I said before and Toneisha surprised me with a really sweet and thoughtful gift. Since I love to travel she bought me a passport holder and luggage tag. I love it. she knows me too well!

We had a game night, drinks, cake and lots of other things over the course of the weekend.... I was so sad to come home.

During the week my mom mailed me my gifts. She sent me some clothes from Victoria Secret that I wanted. My personal fave.... the convertible dress. Omg its hot and its fits like it was made for me. They ways to wear it are ENDLESS. She got me another adorable sundress, a tank and a cardigan. Most of which are in pink... my fave. The convertible dress is in a purple color. Sooo pretty!

So on the 8th I had a tiny brunch with a few girlfriends. This month was hard to coordinate because EVERYONE has either a graduation/wedding/race/something going on mother' day weekend or the weekend after.....

We ate at the Hobbitt Cafe on the patio and it was such a lovely day. The food there was so good and the mimosas amazing..... My dear friends Kat, Emily Daniels, Emily Gerger, and Alicia were able to join me and they gave me really sweet gifts.

Me opening my gift from Kat

Yummy Mimosas

My buffalo avocado burger

Em's avocado omelet ( or calzone as she liked to call it)

When lunch was over i went home and met up with Rebekka at her pool with her roommate Sarah and Sarah's boyfriend. Some neighbors were out there with their dog and we had a hell of a time. Shanna and her boyfriend showed up and we had a fun time by the pool. Since Shanna, Bekka and I all have birthdays within a week of each other we got a little photo.
Bekka and i spent the rest of the night watching the movie the Kite Runner ( which was excellent) and then Betty White on SNL ( best bday gift ever)

The next day on my actual birthday i did absolutely NOTHING. my dad came over in the morning and brought me a card and then he went with my step family and did the whole mother's day thing. i really missed my mom and last mother's day was the last time I saw my grandma before she died so i just didnt want to remind myself of that so i opted out. I stayed in my pjs all day and relaxed. It was quite nice. I think the dog enjoyed it. I was a little ticked off that he didnt do anything for me for mother's day.... when will dogs learn? haha jk

Friday the 14th my heterosexual life partner hahahah my best friend Michelle came in town to celebrate for the weekend. That night we met up with my oldest guy friend Ryan and his amazing wife Lea and one of my favorite places... Amazon Grill. We drank Mojitos and Michelle gave me my gifts. She found my favorite pair of earrings in another color, a wristlet, some cute notecards and.... Single girl's madlibs. We had a blast and came up with some funny and sometimes rather inappropriate madlibs lines that has the 4 of us several new inside jokes.

The next morning Michelle and I woke up and joined my friend Shanna, Bekka and Jenny for Brunch at the Hobbitt cafe again. It was raining the entire time but we were able to sit on the patio under the cover. We ate yummy food once again and enjoyed the girl talk.

That night we had dinner at the W Grill ( my review will come later in the month) and then met up once again with Bekka and Shanna at Rebel's on Washington to celebrate their birthday's as well. We stayed awhile and then left once my buddy Mike showed up.

US BIRTHDAY PEOPLE

I had told everyone to meet at Open city and we got a text from my old boss and friend Mike that he was headed that way so we did the same, only to find that Open city well... isnt open. We went next door to the Tipsy Clover and hung out for quite awhile. Mike and his gf showed up and James made it. We got over to shot bar shortly before they closed and unfortunately didnt get to spin the wheel, but we ran into some other people and when the bar closed we headed to katz deli for some late night eats. lol i saw a guy when i came out of the restroom i hadnt seen since highschool. we were cool then but you never know if someone remembers you, so i just kept walking and giggled.

Since it was graduation weekend a majority of my friends couldnt make it which i understood but needless to say i had a BLAST!

My trip to Dallas

My trip to Dallas and the Warrior Dash

First off, my weekend up there was amazing and boy do i have some AMAZING FRIENDS!!!
I got up to Arlington Thursday night and swung by to see Braden at Houlihans. Had a snack and avoided the old man next to me trying to get friendly lol and headed to Toneisha's when she got out of class. Her and I stayed up super late just chit chatting. It was so great to see her. It had been to long since her and I just were alone to catch up.

The next morning we woke up and ate and got ready for our adventure. i hadnt had carbs in months and that morning i had special k ( judge me all you want I LOVE IT) and that afternoon i felt like i was on crack. it was hilarious how the sugar effected me. We started the afternoon off by going to Plato's Closet and did a little shopping. Toe had never been before so I had to introduce her to it! I bought 2 things for work and we headed off to an area called the highlands where we shopped and ate sushi at Piranha. It was delicious!

After lunch we drove to the West End of Dallas and walked around and took photos of some of the buildings the the street art we encountered.

On our way our we saw several bus loads of the polygomists parked right next to us. we took a few photos and tried to be slick about it, but they probably knew.... ah well.

We left and went to a ritzy part of Dallas and Toe took me to get Frozen yogurt( my fave) since i hadnt had any in FOREVER!!! omg it was great.

We left Dallas and drove to Lewisville to see my oldest friend Kristin. Kristin was kind enough to let me dig through all the things she had cleaned out of her closet. ( let me tell you i racked up... she's awesome) the picture below was one of my faves.... hehehe

We got back to Arlington and cleaned up and met up with the boys at Fuzzy's tacos for dinner and then to Dukes for some drinks.

The next morning the boys ran in the Warrior Dash. The three of us got up there early to scope it out. Omg the stupid guy at the parking lied to us and told us we were at the closest lot to the event. WRONG. We walked FOREVER! I was like " ummm maybe this treck to the site is in fact the warrior dash..."

There were lots of costumes. i think the smurfs were my favorite. My least favorite.... girls that strapped fake penises to their shorts and were acting so gross with them. Really?! I bet your parents are so proud....

The boys did awesome. I held on to this guys bag while he ran and he finished up with them. i felt bad i tried to time it so that i could watch them hurdle the fire and crawl through the mud before the finish line, but they were faster than they expected. I was waiting and waiting and all of a sudden i feel this wet thing on the back of my foot and it was brandon trying to sneak up on me! :( i missed them but i'm just glad i was there. Braden and Brandon are 2 of the greatest guys i've EVER known. it was awesome to have this experience with them!

Afterwards, they dropped me off at Toe's apt and her and I went to get drinks and desserts while the boys showered and ordered pizza. We did what Toe and I love most and had..... GAME NIGHT! Kristin and her boyfriend Ricky came over and we had a blast!

CAKE NOM NOM NOM

Kristin and I!!!

Our pieces for the game Quelf

Braden had to have his belt wrapped around his head the whole game and part of the game he had to have his hands stuck to his head. brandon for awhile had to slap his knee and say "whackawhackawhacka" everytime someone laughed. needless to say thats was the only thing out of his mouth for ...quite awhile. Toneisha's husband Evan had to have a picture of peroxide on his forehead the whole night. Such a random but fun game!

Then we played dirt.... i think us girls had the most dirt.... lol

The next morning Morgan drove up from Austin and we headed out with the boys to the race site again!

They're the best. Love you guys!

The race was a blast. I cant even describe to you how much mud there was and how deep it was. you saw shoes everywhere from people who had lost them. Some of the obstacles were a little janky and over played on the website. Some on the other hand were underplayed. they said you had to go down a river bank, but they made slides out of the mud ( my favorite part) and then they said you would have to wade through a river.... well there were parts i couldnt stand and you have to hurdle huge logs. Fortunately Braden and Brandon warned me about that part. omg we had a blast!!!!! I got some more photos from the photographers but i need to edit them and put them up.

Fire hurdles at the end

Mud under barbed wire before the finish line

Right after finishing... like morgans banana and my facial expression lol?

After getting hosed down in the freezing water
We waited forever for these darn turkey legs and omg were they AWESOME

WE DID IT!!!!
the boys dropped us off and unfortunately because of how late it was, Toneisha and Evan had to go to bed, but the 4 of us went out to BJS for dinner, drinks and Pizookies. Yum.

Great weekend. I love challenges, i love friends, laughter and memories. Definitely a lot of memories and reminders of how each of these people are a blessing in my life! XOXO
